"Candi-what?!?" you may ask. Allow me to educate you:
Candida is a fungus or yeast that is present in everyone's body. It only becomes a problem if it starts to grow like crazy and take over your entire digestive system.
Side effects of a candida overgrowth can include: allergies, asthma, digestive problems, yeast infections, acne, hives, & a some serious cravings for sugar. Why? Because sugar is what keeps the little monsters alive. So, in order to get rid of a candida overgrowth you must AVOID ALL SUGAR! That includes the healthy sugars in fruits & sweet veggies.
If it's sweet, it's keeping the little buggers alive.
My only symptoms of possible candida overgrowth were a few unexplained acne outbreaks & an increase in allergies. But I did have many things in my past that put me at risk for overgrowth such as antibiotic & birth control use as well as an over-use of sugar in my foods: as a child, it was refined white sugar, today, it's maple syrup & fruit.
So, I figured it was worth a try to see if my system needed a clean out.
Because there are some conflicting views on what you can and cannot eat on a candida diet, I decided to pick a source & stick to it: CandidaDiet.com. This is where I found my lists of what foods to eat & what foods to avoid as well as suggestions for anti-fungals & probiotics to help me heal my insides.
How'd the diet go? Well, considering that the vegan version of a candida cleanse can be VERY limiting, I stopped the hardcore stage 2 version of the diet after about 5-7 days. I just didn't feel like I was getting enough balanced nutrition while living off of guacamole, brown rice, & flash greens [minus the sugar-y sriracha].
The plus side of all of this? Limiting my diet introduced me to the amazingness of guacamole made in my brand new Vita-mix!
Don't want to spend a month's rent on a blender? I'm sure your food processor or blender will do a completely adequate job with this recipe. :)
Ingredients [altered slightly from the Vita-mix recipe book]
2-3 avocados, peeled & pitted 1/4 tsp sea salt a sprinkling of cayenne pepper the juice from 1 1/2 lemons 1 red onion, chopped 1 tomato*, cut in half [*not on the candida stage 2 diet ;) ]
Place ingredients in blender in order listed & process on low** until only slightly chunky. ** If you have a vita-mix, start your blending at 1 & increase slowly to 3. Serve over brown rice if you're cleansing or with chips if you're not. Enjoy!
